In general, Ōtsutsukis seem pretty bland characters. They seem to be just some random aliens trying to plant a monstrous tree in different planets that absorbs the planet’s life force and generates a chakra fruit that the Ōtsutsukis consume in order to gain more power and take another step to become a God. However, if you observe closely, they all have their personalities. In this blog, we are going to check out Isshiki Ōtsutsuki.
If you are up to date with Boruto Anime and/or Manga, you already know a bit about him. In Naruto era, there were countless individuals that have shown a lot of patience. For eg, Orochimaru having patience for around 3 years for making Sasuke as his vessel thereby gaining access to sharingan, or Obito waiting for so long, redirecting Akatsuki from a team working towards peace by peaceful means to a terrorist orgaanization that also aims to attain peace, however is ready to go to any extent to attain their goals including destroying villages. We also had Madara, who used his Sharingan to revive himself, wait till his old age to attain rinnegan, tricking Obito to become his replacement once he dies and even choosing Nagato as the perfect one to hold on to his rinnegan till Madara is back. Then we also have Kaguya, who patiently waited fo so long having faith on Black Zetsu for getting revived.
Isshiki was a part of Ōtsutsuki clan’s main family and the leader of Kara, who was sent with his partner Kaguya over a thousand years ago, in order to plant the divine tree and harvest chakra fruit. Kaguya, being lower-ranked, was planned to be the sacrifice to create the chakra fruit. However, she betrayed him to attain the chakra fruit herself, leaving him on the verge of death after destroying his lower half. He eventually encountered a monk named Jigen. At this point of time, Isshiki didn’t have enough strength to implant a Kāma on Jigen. In a desperate attempt to survive, he devised a plan. He shrunk himself to enter Jigen’s strength and absorb Jigen’s nutrients in order to survive his injury. Eventually, he gained control over Jigen’s body and embedded a Kāma on him.
Eventually, he formed Kara and became it’s leader as Jigen and acquired new Ten-Tails seedling. Throughout the years, there were people who joined this secret organisation and formed “Inners” of Kara with their followers outside the organisation known as “Outers”. Inners collectively agree on obtaining the Chakra fruit by cultivating a new God Tree huge enough to devour all life on Earth. Since Kaguya betrayed him and eventually got sealed, he has no choice but to sacrifice himself via Jigen in order to make the Ten-Tails bloom into a God Tree. Jigen was not a perfect vessel, therefore his body will die within a few days upon reviving himself though Jigen as Jigen’s body would not be able to bear Isshiki’s chakra. Therefore, he decided on transforming Jigen’s body as much Ōtsutsuki as possible to be fed to the Ten-Tails for its growth. The other problem was that he can not embed his Kāma to anyone else unless and until he revives himself through his current vessel(i.e. Jigen). In order to make this possible, the Kara inner Amado found out a way to do this by scientific means.
Even though he now had the means to transfer his Kāma, he still needed to find a perfect vessel for himself, the one who could survive the embedding of Kāma as well as be able to bear Isshiki’s chakra once he revived through this new vessel. He eventually found fourteen boys(including code) and then also found Kawaki whose blood had been tested as a viable candidate by Delta. Jigen approached Kawaki’s abusive father with a large sum of money to buy Kawaki for his plan and making Kawaki the fifteenth candidate. All fifteen candidates were experimented for the transfer of the Kāma. The only ones to survive this experiment were Code(who got an incomplete white Kāma and became the most loyal subordinate and one of the most powerful Kara inner) and Kawaki(who turned out to be the perfect vessel for Isshiki). Even though he finally found a perfect vessel for himself, he still had to have Kawaki master his Kāma and increase it’s progress as much as possible to prepare Kawaki’s body for Isshiki’s revival.
Eventually, the vessel(Kawaki) was lost and then found by Konoha’s Team 7. Kawaki’s Kāma started to resonate with Boruto’s own Kāma leading to not just developing their brotherhood, but also the development of their Kāma to almost completion. As a part of Amado’s plan, Koji Kashin(revealed to be Jiraya’s clone) managed to force Isshiki to revieve himself through Jigen, thereby removing Kawaki’s Kāma.
In order to prevent his plan from failing, he decided to implant another Kāma on Kawaki inorder to revive himself through Kawai and use Boruto(as Boruto is Momoshiki’s vessel) as a sacrifice to Ten-Tails. For this, he left for Konohagakure to implant the new Kāma on Kawaki. Kawaki, along with Sumire, Katasuke and Shikamaru were transferred to a special room that belonged to Anbu that was sort of Byakugan proof. This is to make sure that Isshiki could not track Kawaki using his Byakugan. On arriving to the village, Isshiki had to face Naruto, Sasuke and Boruto. Boruto successfully transported Isshiki along with Naruto, Sasuke and himself using the teleportation abilities that his Kāma provided him. Now, they just have to make sure that Isshiki doesn’t leave that dimension till he runs our of his life, however Isshiki overpovers them. In a desperate attempt to stop Isshiki, Naruto and Kurama were forced to use Baryon mode, in order to shorten his lifespan, they just had to make sure that their attacks came in contact with Isshiki.
They managed to shorten his life span from a few days to a few mins, however, as Naruto started to lose his strength, Isshiki lands a hit on Naruto and manage to fade away the Baryon mode. As he keeps hitting Naruto, Isshiki senses Kawaki’s chakra connected to Naruto’s chakra through the prosthetic arm made for Naruto and given to Kawaki by Naruto. Isshiki uses this to teleport Kawaki to the dimension where he was fighting Naruto. On Naruto and Sasuke’s request, Kawaki tries to run away, however Isshiki uses his weakness to his advantage. He threatens Kawaki that he would kill Naruto if Kawaki doesn’t surrender to Isshiki. Naruto has been a father to Kawaki and so he didn’t want to lose Naruto and therefore he decides to make a move. Kawaki surrenders to Isshiki allowing Isshiki to implant a new Kāma on Kawai, however as he feels relieved on success of his plan, for which he had been patiently waiting for over a thousand year, something unexpected happens, the Kāma that he just implanted on Kawaki fades away. As Isshiki is about to die, Kawaki reveals himself, revealing that the Kawaki that has been implanted with the Kāma was in fact just a shadow clone.
Shortly after dying, as Isshiki’s soul fades away, he appears in front of Code through his white Kāma handing over his will to Code and calling Code his one and only successor.
