In this blog, we are gonna see the reason for Shoto getting chosen as Enji(Endeavor) as his successor.
If you are an anime only fan, kindly note that there are some spoilers in this blog, however there are some major spoilers that I have avoided as well.
So, as we all know, one of the reason Enji Todoroki a.k.a Endeavor married Rei was her quirk. His wanted a successor who could surpass All Might. He thought that a child with both his and Rei's quirks would be able to surpass All Might. His first child "Toya Todoroki" only inherited his quirk (a variation of his quirk). Even though Toya only had flame ability, Enji believed that Toya will be the one to surpass All Might and therefore started training him. Enji then trained him to turn on his flames and focused the training over increasing the flames only, something that he regretted later. Even though Toya seemed to have flame ability that could surpass that of Enji's, every time he uses his quirk he gets burned. Enji took him to the doctor and they learned that even though Toya inherited Enji's flames, unlike Enji whose body is resistant to flames, Toya inherited his mother's resistance to ice instead. Due to this, Enji abandoned his training. Once Shoto was born, he turned out to be the child with the combination of both his father's and his mother's quirk. Due to this, Enji then chose Shoto as his successor instead.
Even though Enji chose Shoto as his successor, it does not mean that he does not care about Toya anymore. Toya continued to train even though Enji stopped training him. Toya was initially jealous of Shoto as he was chosen to be Enji's successor instead of Toya. Toya's training caused him further damage seeing which Enji asked Toya to stop training as it will only cause him more damage. Toya was close to his brother Natsuo who blames Enji for his brother's demise. Enji himself considers himself responsible for what happened to Toya.
