Watched for the first time: Sonic the Hedgehog (movie 2020)

Hello everyone, long time no see, I hope y’all are doing great.

It feels great to be back.

So, first of all, to be honest, my first encounter with Sonic the hedgehog was when I first played the NES video game based on this character. I have never been a big fan of the character and in fact it's a character that for me was a long forgotten one, that is until the first trailer of a movie based on the character released around five years back. I wasn't very interested in watching the movie and so I didn't watch it. The sequels of the movie never came to my attention and the character was again forgotten by me. Back when the first trailer of the first movie dropped I decided to never watch the movie. Then what is the point of this blog then? Well, a few days back I was scrolling through Youtube like a normal person in 21st Century and then I came across an edit video. The video had some scenes from a sequel of the movie and it grabbed my attention really good. I could not ignore it and then I just had to watch the movie. So then I decided to give it a try and last night I finally watched  the movie for  the very first time. It was sort of a blind watch since I have no memory of the trailer that I watched five years back.

The speedy plot

The story begins in a flash forward with our speedster hero Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) fleeing from an enemy in San Francisco. From here our speedy protagonist starts the narration on how it all came to this. We are then taken back to the origin showing how Sonic had to flee from his home world and ended up in Earth. Here he makes himself somewhat comfortable. He tries to pretend to not be alone by being around people without them noticing him. One day he watches a baseball game and during night time when no one was there he played the game with himself. This ended up in a realization that he cannot ignore that he is alone in this world. Out of somewhat frustration, he starts the run around the baseball diamond with all the anger and sadness generating more and more energy with each lap as he speeds more and more leading to a huge electromagnetic blast that leads to a blackout in the entire city. This catches the notice of the military and they hire our antagonist Dr. Robotnik (played by the iconic actor and producer Jim Carrey). Dr. Robotnik gets to the work and gets the clues of Sonic's whereabouts. Sonic fails to escape to the mushroom world has to run from his hideout has to run to the next place where he feels safe - out secondary protagonist Tom (played by James Marsden). Here he attempts to escape to Mushroom world but gets caught and accidentally tranquillised by Tom. In the process, Sonic accidentally drops his bag of rings in the rooftop of a building in San Francisco before falling unconscious. Dr. Robotnik finds them and they had to run for their life. In the process of heading towards San Francisco to get the rings, the two of them become friends. Dr. Robotnik uses a hair accidentally dropped from Sonic to enhance his jet and meets them in the rooftop of the building where Sonic finally found the rings. Sonic tries to use his speed to escape and realises that Dr. Robotnik is using his hair to speedup his jet and we then arrive at the flash forward scene that we were at the beginning of the movie. Sonic almost loses when Tom calls Sonic his friend and Sonic gets up with full energy for a final strike. Tom and Sonic team up and successfully send Dr. Robotnik to the Mushroom World. Sonic becomes a part of Tom's family and Dr. Robotnik decides to find a way out of the Mushroom world. In the mid credit scene, Tails (Voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey) arrives Earth in search of Sonic.

Thoughts on the movie

Overall it was a fantastic movie, I really enjoyed it. Ben Schwartz did an amazing job bring Sonic to life. Jim Carrey's portrayal of a somewhat self-centred Dr. Robotnik was fabulous as well. The friendship between Sonic and Tom was heart warming starting from somewhat of an annoyance and ending up in a deep bound of friendship. The curiosity of Sonic leading to his bucket list also lead to several fun and comedic scene too. Sonic's loneliness and desire of friendship and connection was a key to the plot in my opinion. Even though it was sad to see our hero lonely, without it the movie was not possible. The painful moment of realization and the run filled with anger and sorrow was what lead to a chain of events. Without this chain of events Dr. Robotnik would probably not have gotten even a hint of Sonic's existence, however that also means that Sonic would have never met Tom and Sonic would have never found the connection that he desperately needed. Some bad things happened due to the power outrage but it also lead to a wonderful, heart touching, comedic, family fun story. The CGI and VFX team have also done an outstanding job.

Overall the movie has 6.5/10 rating in IMDB, however for me it is an easy 9/10 at the very least.
