So, the January 2023 issue of Boruto manga came out yesterday and looks like what we were waiting for has finally begun. Literally the name of the chapter is "Time Drawing Near".
The Boruto series started with a flash forward, in the flash forward, Konoha was already in a destroyed state and Kawaki and Boruto were fighting. In the fight, Kawaki said something, he said to Boruto "I will send you where I sent Lord Seventh". We believed that it might mean that Naruto has probably been killed by Kawaki. Then we got introduced to Boruto and Kawaki in the series, their back story, character development, etc. After all they have been through, som e of us started to believe that Boruto is a bad guy and Kawaki is just trying to stop him in the fight we saw in the flash forward. One thing had always been clear, Kawaki is ready to do anything to keep Naruto safe, he even killed Boruto to protect Naruto from Borushiki.
At the end of chapter 76, Kawaki seem to have sensed that Boruto and Momoshiki are communicating. Chapter 77 began with Kawaki directly speaking to Momoshiki.
Kawaki then leaves, erases hi chakra and visits Naruto. In tells Naruto how much he means to Kawaki and that Kawaki is ready to do anything to protect him. Kawaki has decided to eliminate all Otsutsuki by himself, that includes Momoshiki sealed within Boruto. He reveals that he does not regret killing Boruto and that he felt that he failed when Boruto revived. Hinata slaps him and starts to cry, however Kawaki admits that he is crazy enough to kill his own brother (yes, he used the work brother showing that he still considers Boruto as his brother). Naruto however reminds Kawaki that he will have to finish off Naruto before getting to Boruto and that is not what he wants to do. Kawaki is ready for their hatred, however he is also ready to kill Boruto as he believes it is the only way to protect Naruto. Then he does it, he says that he doesn't ask them to understand and then he opens a portal and sends Naruto and Hinata to another dimension.
It is therefore possible that by the time for the flash forward fight, Kawaki might have figured out a way to kill Momoshiki without killing Boruto(as he says that he will send Boruto where he sent Naruto which we now know is another dimension and that he will obviously not send Momoshiki to where Naruto is in order to keep Naruto safe).
